Chungbuk's Tourism Triumph: Record 38.98 Million Visitors in 2023
Chungbuk Province hits an all-time high in tourist numbers.
Jecheon, Danyang, and Chungju emerge as top destinations.
Chungbuk Province welcomed a record-breaking 38.98 million tourists in 2023, marking the highest number of visitors since the collection of annual tourism statistics began in 2004. This impressive figure represents a 23.5% increase from the previous year, reflecting a surge of 7.43 million additional tourists. The top destinations within the province were Jecheon, Danyang, and Chungju, with Jecheon leading the pack by attracting 11.13 million visitors.
The surge in tourism was significantly bolstered by the popularity of key attractions such as Dodamsambong Peak in Danyang, which drew 2.4 million visitors, and the Nongdari Bridge in Jincheon, which saw a remarkable 164% increase in visitor numbers, totaling 2.77 million. The Gudambong Peak in Danyang and the Danyang Danuri Aquarium, Korea's largest freshwater fish aquarium, also contributed to the tourism boom.
In response to the rising interest, Chungbuk Province is implementing strategic measures to reach its goal of 50 million annual tourists. These include the designation and promotion of provincial festivals, the introduction of accommodation discount coupons, and initiatives to attract more foreign tourists. Additionally, the province plans to strengthen its inbound tourism sales marketing efforts.
Looking ahead, Chungbuk anticipates further growth in tourism with upcoming events such as the Jecheon International Oriental Medicine Bio Industry Expo and the Yeongdong World Gugak Expo scheduled for September and October. The opening of the Cheongju Osco, the province's first exhibition and convention center, is also expected to enhance tourist appeal.
A provincial official emphasized the commitment to enhancing Chungbuk's tourism competitiveness by expanding stay-type tourism infrastructure and developing unique tourism content to invigorate domestic demand.
